Acupuncture has been around for thousands of years and has been used to treat a wide variety of problems. In the past decade we have seen an explosion in its popularity and we attribute that to how well it works for a wide variety of problems, a greater acceptance by the general public looking to alternative treatments, and that the medical community has come on board as we receive dozens of referrals for acupuncture every month.
Practicing acupuncture in Sioux Falls since 2001, the most common question people ask is "How does acupuncture work?".
There are many ways to describe what acupuncture does, some more eastern medicine philosophy, some more western medicine philosophy, and some a bit of both. The most traditional explanation revolves around the concept of "Qi", pronounced "Ch-ee". Qi can be defined as energy that flows throughout the body and the theory is that we can utilize this energy by placing acupuncture needles at specific points on the body and thus direct the flow of Qi, which can correct imbalances that are creating problems. Another explanation is that placing acupuncture points in the body causes vasodilation or the opening of blood vessels, which can increase blood flow and in turn increases oxygenation of body tissues, thus enhancing the body's overall ability function properly. In terms of treating pain, acupuncture has been shown to stimulate the body's own pain killing mechanisms. So, it could be summed up that acupuncture helps restore your body's natural balance, eliminates pain, and increases your body functions leading to increased energy and vitality.
It is not uncommon to hear patients that are new to Acupuncture in our Sioux Falls clinic note how surprised they are that the treatment "isn't painful" or state "how relaxing it is". They will commonly find themselves in a state of deep relaxation during acupuncture sessions and many even sleep.

IS IT SAFE?
When performed by trained physicians using disposable needles and trained in 'clean needle technique', acupuncture is very safe. In over 16 years of practice, we have NOT had encountered a single major problem with acupuncture. There may be some occasional light bruising where a needle has been placed, but it simply fades within several days.
Chiropractic physicians who perform acupuncture have undergone vigorous training as part of their schooling to function as primary physicians, which means we are capable of accurately diagnosing conditions which may require a referral to a medical specialist.
"We were looking for new chiropractic care when we heard about Natural Arts. We liked the family feel of the clinic and that we were greeted by name shortly after we became patients. We have been extremely happy with the on-going care that we have received and feel like our needs for good health are truly being cared for. We feel blessed to have found a “home” with Natural Arts" Don & Sam B.
