MRI’S OVERUSED WITH TYPICAL BACK PAIN?

MRI.jpg

A recent study in the esteemed medical journal JAMA reported in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine reported that MORE THAN HALF outpatient lumbar spine MRI scans weren't appropriate.

“When analyzed by an expert panel, 29% of MRI referrals to two large teaching hospitals were deemed inappropriate and a further 27% were of "uncertain value," Derek Emery, MD, of the University of Alberta in Edmonton, and colleagues found. Only 34% of lower back scans ordered by family physicians were considered appropriate compared with 58% ordered by physicians in other specialties.”

Why is this happening?  Researchers have suggested that it is due to a combination of things; physicians concerned about being sued if they miss something, the lack of physician accountability with cost, patient expectations, and other research has suggested physicians who had ownership stake in imaging facilities were more likely to order MRIs.

At Natural Arts, we do not have an X-Ray machine and if we feel we need them OR an MRI/CT scan, we refer them out to be taken at the local hospital facilities.  We do this because we find that with a proper history and examination, you can rule out the need for these tests in most of the cases we see every day.  When these tests are indicated by history and examination, we like to have them done at the hospital facilities because the turnaround time is very fast and they images are read by radiologists who do this all day long.  Furthermore, we do not have ownership stake in any imaging facility and thus our patients can be assured we are not influenced in any way when it comes to ordering MRI exams.
